Pastor Coty’s father, Amo, as he was known to us, transitioned to Heaven on Saturday January 10, 2026. This man was one of the founders of the mission work in the Village of Cahess Haiti. Amo did not have an official title and he did not hold an office in the ministries that he served with, however he was always present, silently serving beside those who came from other countries, to minister to the people of his Village of Cahess. It is safe to say that without Amo, the ministries of North Haiti Mission and Coastal Haiti Mission would not have existed in their present form, and maybe they would not have existed at all. It is fitting that we dedicate this newsletter to the memory of Amo. Those of us who knew him, formed a deep love for him, in spite of the language barrier that existed between us. It is my hope that you the reader of this newsletter, will sense the value that Amo has been to us who knew him, and to people of his Village, the Village of Cahess, Haiti.

Ken Johansson

-TWO MEN –

They made a difference in the village of Cahess, Haiti.

Oh, maybe not something colossal, but surely something meritorious.  My late husband, Pastor Clinton (Clint) Goddard (left) and Villager Amodius (Amo) Joseph (right) have given both time and talents to two different missions set up in the small village located in Northern Haiti. Clint was one of the founders and administrator of both missions, the first called North Haiti Mission (NHM), and the second Coastal Haiti Mission (CHM).

From the beginning, Amo Joseph was there working and helping the mission teams that accompanied Clint to the mission year after year.  I think he was a gift to the mission!  Amo was concerned for the well-being of the property and was our special security person when we returned to the states. (Most of us on the mission teams, including Clint Goddard, lived in the U.S.)

One evening, or should I say one early morning (about 2 a.m.) my friend Cindy and I were sitting outside just talking when we noticed a figure moving about the buildings on the mission grounds.  We were startled, but not surprised to learn that it was Amo, most likely just checking things out.

Our time at North Haiti Mission was productive, educational, and rewarding. Marching, dancing, and singing with the Haitians the evening Ken Johansson (now current administrator of Coastal Haiti Mission) finished wiring our church/school building and the lights went on for the first time in that particular area was exhilarating and inspiring.  Blacks and whites worshipping their God together!

The mission teams that Clint put together each year from the U.S. including (one boy and his dad from the U.K.), to accompany him to the mission were an incredible bunch of people!  They came and built buildings (one an all-purpose building, used at first as a church and a school, and later as a large dormitory to house our mission teams.)

They planted gardens, put in plumbing, painted walls, fostered friendships with the Haitian people, and, walked hand-in-hand with their children.

North Haiti Mission played host several times to medical teams that came from the U.S., who, without charge, triaged, and treated about 100 people in one day.  A pick-up truck would arrive at the mission during early morning and nurses and other medics would spill out of the back of the truck ready to set up their “clinic” in one of our buildings.  Already the line was formed by folks with the hope that they would be one of the ones to be seen that day.  Most were, although some were given funds to see a specialist if required by their illness or injury.

And all the time?  Amo was there, giving assistance over the years.  Always ready to lend a helping hand.

Well, if it was a perfect world I could say that North Haiti Mission would continue until the Lord Jesus returns to earth.  Not so.  In the springtime of 2009, because of a land dispute and a broken promise to our mission, the leadership of North Haiti Mission withdrew its involvement from North Haiti Mission and moved on.  We lost it all.  Years of investment of time and treasure.  But the biggest and the best investment was in the lives of the men, woman, and children who lived in the village of Cahess.  God’s family in the beautiful, but wounded village, by the Caribbean Sea.

In May of that same year (2009) Articles of Association for the establishment of a new mission were signed by some of the former-officers of North Haiti Mission.  The new outreach would be called Coastal Haiti Mission, and it would function again near the village of Cahess, not far from North Haiti Mission which now lay pretty much motionless and silent – the sound of laughter from the children – gone.

The day-to-day business on the ground of the new mission would be under the supervision of Rev. Lyvinx “Coty” Joseph, one of Amo’s sons.  Clint Goddard would again function as administrator.

A church building funded through our mission by a couple from Georgia was built, and school for the children was once again in session in Cahess.  And the best part?  Our ministry is once again touching the folks in Cahess!  And Amo?  Still a man to go to!

Because of our wonderful supporters, our Food For Those In Need Program, benefits about 40 families per month who are without adequate support, and our School Lunch Program, provides lunch for all students and teachers on every school day.  Again, through the faithfulness and generosity of those who support CHM, the Lord has supplied the funds to carry on these programs and other projects.

Both men, Amo and Clint are gone now.  Clinton Parks Goddard passed away in 2012, and Jean Baptiste Joseph, AKA  Amodius (Amo) passed away just weeks ago.  May his dear wife, children and other loved ones receive the pure and life-giving comfort of our Comforter.

Coastal Haiti Mission continues on under the good leadership of Ken Johansson who has worked with NHM and then CHM for many years.

We miss our “Two Men” –  Two more lights gone from the earth.

In Memory of Amodice (Amo) Joseph

The Coastal Haiti Mission Board has searched diligently to find a meaningful way to honor the memory of Amo.

In order for you the reader, to understand the decision of the CHM Board, we need to present how children are received into the school. If a child or the parents of a child want their child to attend school, but they have no money for tuition or a school uniform, the child will attend the school at no cost to the parents.

However, the child will come to school without a uniform, so he will look different than the rest of the students, because he will be wearing his street clothes. He will look different and he may feel different, and maybe he will even be embarrassed.

So, the Board wondered if Pastor Coty and his family would consider a uniform fund, to provide the students who have not been able to have a uniform, to provide one to him or her. The fund will be endowed, so that it will be replenished each year going forward in time.

We presented this plan to Pastor Coty and I repeat his exact words:

“This is a wonderful idea,

As a father who always invested in education, having the opportunity to help children go to school in his memory, would be a great honor to him.

It is truly beautiful and meaningful.”

I asked pastor Coty “Do you approve of this plan”

Pastor Coty answered: “YES and Yes brother Ken”

An Opportunity to Honor the Memory of Amodice Joseph

In view of the acceptance of Pastor Coty and his family to this plan, we extend the opportunity to you to join with the Board of Coastal Haiti Mission to make the Memorial Fund for Uniforms, a reality.

If you desire to make a donation in memory of Amo, please send it to the address at the end of this newsletter, and mark it Memorial Fund. If you wish to give a donation “On Line”, please use our PayPal service also located at the end of this newsletter.

A Message to the Members of the North Haiti Mission Team (2003 to 2009)

Ken Johansson Writes:

I want to direct my words to the wonderful cadre of people from all walks of life, who came to Cahess Haiti, between the years of 2003 to 2009, to blend their time, talent and treasure, to build a place that would serve the people in the Village of Cahess, Haiti. What a wonderful time we had as we worked and sweated in the hot sun, bringing hope and healing to this village. You built buildings, cared for the sick, prayed for salvation and healing for those who would receive this ministry.

What a wonderful group of loving people you were, living out the scriptural mandate to serve the poor and needy people, in a place far from your home.

When the traumatic end came, which ended our involvement in North Haiti Mission, we were discouraged. It was easy to think that we had failed. However, I am confident that our God was pleased with every effort made and every dollar spent.

What we did not realize was, that while we were building buildings and serving people, God was building the spiritual character and framework of the next generation. This is the generation who are the leaders now. Pastor Coty is of this generation.  While some of us were able to continue serving in the mission to follow, namely Coastal Haiti Mission, the foundation of the present work was created in those early years.

Many of the precious people who served so well, have gone to their eternal reward. But to those of us who are still here, I want to say to you—We did not fail, what we did, berthed a raging success. The success is not in the form of what we expected or envisioned, but it is in the form of what God made from broken promises, into a ministry that is a glowing light in a difficult place.

So, in spite of the disappointment that came in 2009, I revel in the memories that we created together.

Again, my message to those of you remain here on this earth : We did not fail, we were immensely successful, and only eternity will tell the full story.

Ken Johansson, Administrator of Coastal Haiti Mission

P.S. I would love to connect with any of you who shared in this ministry. You can reach me at ken@coastalhaitimission.org, or you can call me at (508) 615- 8627. You may need to leave a message, but I will certainly call you back.

The Christmas Party

The Christmas party was a great success and we have extensive reporting on it. In order to keep this newsletter to a reasonable length, it seems prudent to give the Children’s Christmas Party Report in the February 2026 CHM Newsletter

The School Lunch Program

Pastor Coty Writes:

After a few weeks of Christmas and New Year’s vacation, the students returned to class with joy. As is customary, we welcomed new students to the school for the month of January. Nothing has changed—we continue with the same determination, the same love, and the same spirit to support these children with both education and nourishment. We are here for their minds and their stomachs.

This time, we offered not only the rice we usually provide, but we also tried a little cornmeal. The children have no choice—whether rice or cornmeal, what matters is that they need food, and they eat it well. With or without uniforms, parents do not hesitate to bring their children every day, especially those who are not yet able to come on their own.

The Construction of 4 New Classrooms

Pastor Coty Writes:

Like dry land waiting for rain, that is how both students and teachers appreciated the new school building—four new classrooms with a small space that can even serve as an office. With a tireless team, we managed to prepare the place to begin this new year. It is money and determination that allow people to accomplish great projects. By God’s grace, we had both: the means to buy materials and pay the workers, and the determination to carry it through. In just a few days, we realized this great dream. We built the roof with concrete, with the idea that in the future we could add more classrooms if we have the resources. One thing not included in our budget was electricity, which has proven to be very important. We also did not have enough funds to plaster the blocks, but the essential thing is that we built the four classrooms and installed doors. (editor’s note: Pastor Coty told me that they still have construction money and the construction work is continuing)

Only those who were present in the old hangar can truly appreciate the great change. No more classroom noise interrupting other classes, no more unbearable heat—now the classes are quiet and in a good climate. We have no words to thank CHM enough for this great work.

The new building gives the school a fresh look and makes all the students even prouder of their school. It is a big step forward, even though there are still more steps to take, but our joy is immense.
