{"id":2264,"date":"2021-08-12T16:01:28","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T20:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coastalhaitimission.org\/?page_id=2264"},"modified":"2022-12-04T11:04:53","modified_gmt":"2022-12-04T16:04:53","slug":"july-2021-newsletter","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/coastalhaitimission.org\/?page_id=2264","title":{"rendered":"July 2021 Newsletter"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>\u00a0<\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Coastal Haiti Mission<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h1>\u00a0<\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>July 2021<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>CONSIDER THIS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>There is something about food that is inherent in \u201ccelebration.\u201d\u00a0 You know, like at a wedding, graduation, christening, birthday, etc.\u00a0 At some point during the occasion the guests are invited to join together at the table to enjoy the food <\/strong><strong>prepared for them by the host or hostess.\u00a0 It is a joy to share the experience with family, friends, and even strangers.\u00a0 A convivial good time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When the prodigal son returned home, his father called for a celebration \u2013 his son was lost, and now he was found:\u201cKill the fatted calf! he ordered. (Luke Chpt.15)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And \u201ccelebrations\u201d can be large or small.\u00a0 The first time I went to Haiti it was with New England and World Missions (now New Missions), co-founded by the late George DeTellis and his wife, Jeanne.\u00a0 They were there to begin their journey into on-site mission work.\u00a0 My late husband, Clint Goddard, and I would be with them for about a week before returning home to Massachusetts.\u00a0 While there, we all lived in tents.\u00a0 As I recall, Jeanne made us our first meal.\u00a0 It was near dusk, and the food was prepared on a kerosene stove sitting on top of an oil drum.\u00a0 The tents were up, and we sat there together on New Missions land \u2013 Pastor George, Jeanne, their son, Charlie, and a few others including four young about-to-be missionaries devoted to work for the mission.\u00a0 As darkness was on its way, we sat there around a small wood fire, bats darting back and forth, attracted by the light, and enjoyed our meal together and each other\u2019s company.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was a celebration.\u00a0 The opening of a seed.\u00a0 The beginning of a mission work that would result in thousands choosing to follow Jesus, thousands receiving medical help, thousands of children receiving good food and an education, and New Missions being raised up to being one of the premier missions in the country of Haiti.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Another time in another place in Haiti my husband and I led a short-term mission team to a childrens\u2019 home .\u00a0 After a few days of hard work under a blazing sun, our team was given a day off.\u00a0 We were brought by our host missionaries, the late John Vrooman and his wife Dianne, to a beach for a picnic, and a day of swimming.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was a long day of surf, sun, and fun, and when we arrived back at the childrens\u2019 home it was dark out, and we were hungry and tired.\u00a0 When we entered the home it was bathed in the soft light emanating from strategically-placed lanterns, and the table set before us was filled with food prepared by the young Haitian pastor who worked with the mission.\u00a0 We sat at the table together, comforted\u00a0 and inspired by one another in our common cause, and, of course, the good food.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Hebrew culture hospitality was important.\u00a0 To sit at another\u2019s table spoke <\/strong><strong>of one\u2019s fidelity and friendship with\u00a0 the host.\u00a0 Imagine now the insult to<\/strong><strong>our Savior when he was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, one who sat with Him at <\/strong><strong>the table provided by Him.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201c. . . Pizza? Maybe some sort of a meal.\u00a0 Something!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We need this time to catch up. . . just to \u201cbe\u201d with real flesh-and-blood people. <\/strong><strong>To turn off the TV, put away the video games and our ever-present iphones \u2013 <\/strong><strong>and just talk and pay attention to one another.\u00a0 A novel idea! Do you think?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagine the \u201cMarriage Supper of the Lamb.\u201d Wow!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking this Way with you,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Connie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Conditions in Haiti after the President&#8217;s Assassination<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Pastor Coty Writes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Since July 7th, we are living with a strange situation in Haiti. After the assassination of the President, the people are living with \u00a0great fear. Even the people in the village are not exempt. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, for more than two weeks before the funeral we were living this strange situation. Roads were blocked with burning tires. No one was brave enough to go out from their immediate community. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I have to explain that the people in the village live one day at the time. They need to go out everyday, looking for something to survive on. (Which is 1 1\/2 miles from the Village of Cahess). \u00a0The people were crying &#8220;justice for President Jovenel\u00a0 Moise&#8221;.\u00a0 There were many people and many news reporters present, from organizations such as Time Magazine. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In some places people were crying for justice. In some other places, people were blocking the roads. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I personally experienced that it is very dangerous to go out on the roads during these kind of events. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One day before the funeral of the President, a child who lives in the orphanage where Nana works, came to see her with a problem. When Nana was finished helping this child, she sent the child back to the orphanage, because the situation was calm that morning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After sometime she telephoned the orphanage and found out that the child had not returned. \u00a0We were also informed that there were demonstrations taking place. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I had to brave the danger of the road to go look for her. I took a motorcycle, for a distance of 10 kilometers ( about 6 miles), during which I crossed more than 10 barricades. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The people standing there were very dangerous. The grand kids go to find job in gardens, where they work just for food. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>They work on watering the gardens, gathering weeds, planting and many other things. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>They are fortunate when they are able to find a garden owner that will hire them for a day. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some garden owners also pay them, but they are not looking for money. They are just looking for a place where they can do something and get food to eat. The answer is that the shipping container, which contains our lighting systems, is still being held by Haitian Customs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Haitian Customs in the city of Cap-Hatien is completely overwhelmed by the volume of shipping containers that are being sent into the country. \u00a0The assassination of the President and the Covid-19 Pandemic has further increased the time to clear customs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The shipping company expects our box of lighting systems to clear customs by the middle of August.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We will provide an update in the next CHM Newsletter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ken Johansson<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>READ ALL ABOUT IT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Because this lighting project is ongoing in time, it is our intention to keep to a minimum, information that is repetitive. \u00a0Therefore we have made a separate document, made up of the lighting project reports, which are located in the previous CHM Newsletters.
